1.1 Maintenance involvement in design, procurement and operation of assets
(I2M1.1)

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to:

  • Present the totality of design activity for the whole product and process life cycle, the control and integration of different technical groups, and show how and when the process can be influenced to improve maintainability and reliability (M&R).
  • Provide perspectives of design and design constraints in order to identify the most appropriate ways in which design can be improved with respect to M&R.

Learning Outcome

On completion of this module, delegates will be able to:

  • Reducing projected maintenance time and costs through design modifications directed at maintenance simplifications.
  • Using maintainability data to estimate item availability or unavailability.
  • Undertake design evaluations at the organisation, system, equipment, component, and information systems levels that include maintainability, reliability and performance parameters.
  • Evaluate performance with respect to M&R and take decisions to effect change and make improvements through design.
  • Set up a feedback system to present suitable data and experience to improve the M&R of future designs.
  • Appreciate the human factors that influence maintainability.
